Dubai Gold District: A Complete Guide for Gold Buyers in 2026

Dubai Gold District is a purpose-built gold and jewellery destination in Deira, launched by Ithra Dubai in January 2026. It brings retail jewellery, bullion trading, wholesale supply and investment services into one location, with more than 1,000 retailers and six supporting hotels. It sits alongside the historic Dubai Gold Souk rather than replacing it, and it includes the world’s first announced “Gold Street” project.

If you are buying gold in Dubai in 2026, this is the single biggest change to the city’s gold landscape in decades.

What exactly is Dubai Gold District?

For most of the last fifty years, “buying gold in Dubai” meant one thing: walking the narrow lanes of the Deira Gold Souk, comparing window displays, and negotiating on making charges.

That is still true. But the map has expanded.

Dubai Gold District is a consolidated commercial zone in Deira that groups the entire gold value chain in one place. Instead of retail sitting in one district and bullion trading, wholesale supply and refining services sitting elsewhere, everything now runs through a single ecosystem.

The district covers four distinct activities:

• Retail jewellery for walk-in shoppers, residents and tourists

• Bullion trading for bars, coins and investment-grade gold

• Wholesale supply for B2B buyers and trade partners

• Investment services including vaulting, certification and financing

The scale matters. More than 1,000 retailers operate across gold, jewellery, perfumery, cosmetics and lifestyle categories. Major regional and international names have committed to the district, including Malabar Gold and Diamonds, Tanishq, Jawhara Jewellery and Al Romaizan. Joyalukkas announced a 24,000 square foot flagship, its largest in the Middle East.

What is the “Gold Street”?

The headline announcement from the January 2026 launch was Gold Street, described as the world’s first street built using gold elements in its construction.

Details are still being released in phases. What has been confirmed:

• It forms part of the wider Dubai Gold District redevelopment

• It is designed as a central attraction within the district, not a standalone landmark

• Design and construction plans are being published in stages

For buyers, Gold Street is less about shopping and more about what it signals. Dubai is investing physical infrastructure into keeping its “City of Gold” title, at a moment when gold prices are at record levels globally.

Why Dubai built it now

Three numbers explain the timing.

$53.41 billion. That is roughly what the UAE exported in gold during 2024 to 2025, with Switzerland, the United Kingdom, India, Hong Kong and Turkiye as major trading partners. The UAE now ranks as the world’s second-largest physical gold trading destination.

147 nationalities. That is how many different nationalities shopped in the district in 2025 alone. No other gold market in the world sees that mix of buyers in one place.

Zero domestic production. The UAE mines almost no gold itself. Its entire position is built on trade infrastructure, trust and regulation. That position has to be defended with investment, and Dubai Gold District is that investment.

The launch also ties into the Dubai Economic Agenda, D33, which targets doubling the size of Dubai’s economy.

Gold Souk vs Dubai Gold District: what is the difference?

This is the question most first-time visitors ask. Here is a straightforward comparison.

The Dubai Gold Souk

• Location: Al Ras, in the heart of Deira

• Format: Traditional open-air market lanes, largely unchanged for decades

• Scale: Around 380 retailers, most of them jewellery traders

• What is sold: Gold, silver and platinum jewellery, plus bullion, loose diamonds and coloured stones

• Negotiation: Expected and completely normal, particularly on making charges

• Best for: Traditional and handcrafted designs, bargaining, and the experience itself

Dubai Gold District

• Location: Deira, surrounding and incorporating the Souk area

• Format: Purpose-built consolidated district launched in January 2026

• Scale: More than 1,000 retailers across gold, jewellery, perfumery, cosmetics and lifestyle

• What is sold: The full value chain, including retail, wholesale supply, bullion trading and investment services

• Negotiation: Varies by retailer and format, since brand flagships often work on fixed pricing

• Best for: Brand flagships, design variety, and one-stop access to trade and investment services

The honest answer for most shoppers: they are complementary, not competing. The Souk is still where you go for the experience and for negotiating on making charges. The wider district gives you brand flagships and a far broader range of designs under one roof.

What this means for your purchase

More choice does not automatically mean better value. With 1,000+ retailers, price and making-charge variation widens rather than narrows. The base gold rate per gram is set internationally and is broadly the same across Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman and Fujairah. What differs is the making charge, and that is where you either save or overpay.

Verification standards remain the same. All gold jewellery sold in Dubai is hallmarked and tested under Dubai Municipality oversight through the Dubai Central Laboratories. A new district does not change what you should be checking on the tag. Our guide on how to identify authentic gold jewellery in Dubai walks through the hallmark checks step by step.

Buying online is still an option. A physical district is impressive, but it is not the only route. If you would rather compare, size and order without the crowds, our guide on how to buy gold jewelry online without regret covers what to verify before you check out.

Practical visitor tips

• Check the live rate before you walk in. The Government of Dubai displays live retail gold rates on outdoor boards in the Gold Souk area. Cross-check against our Dubai gold price guide so you know the base rate before negotiating.

• Know your karat before you arrive. 22K, 21K and 18K behave very differently on price, durability and resale. If you are unsure, start with our breakdown of the difference between 18K, 21K and 22K gold.

• Ask for the making charge separately. Always request the metal cost and the making charge as two separate figures on the invoice.

• Keep the invoice and certificate. Both matter for resale, exchange and insurance.

• Avoid the airport. Airport gold pricing is typically well above city retail. Buy in the city.

• Time your visit. Mornings and weekday afternoons are considerably quieter than evenings and weekends.
